Million dollar Stem-cell Hynes

The Illinois state comptroller, Dan Hynes (D), has decided to jump into a political minefield. I'll try the map his course and see if he steps onto anything that will destroy his future ambitions. This minefield is Stem-cell research funding in Illinois. He is taking the lead in spearheading a similar ballot initiative to California's, spearheaded there by Arnold Swarteneger. Please take the time to read Hynes's Proposed Creation of Stem Cell Research Institute. He would like to fund additional research here in Illinois in order to attract "top of their field" Scientist and teachers. While this is an admirable goal for Illinois, I believe he is missing the point.
Embryonic Stem cell research isn't about "research" it's about "human-research", should we, as a society, perform human research in search of a wonder cure-all. I'll be discussing that more if this goes further, but for now I'm going to support Dan Hynes, not for his proposal, but for his understanding of America. He isn't trying to force this on us, like his anti-religious brethren, his is trying to take this issue to the people.

Hynes deserves applause for tackling a controversial idea that has tremendous potential, proposing a thoughtful approach and a well-designed funding mechanism. Putting the issue before the people in a referendum is the right approach... The Daily Southtown, Dec 8, 2004

President Bush did the right thing by not universally allowing funding for something that many see as morally wrong, Dan Hynes proposal allows the people of Illinois to decide if they think its morally wrong, different states will come to different conclusions on that issue and that’s the way it should be.

Illinois should vote this issue "up or down" in 2006
